Sydney chefs: Relax.
The world's most famous -- and notoriously harshest -- food critic has declared our restaurants up there with the best in the world. After a week of non-stop dining in restaurants around Sydney, A.A. Gill flies out today, leaving chefs and restaurateurs breathing easier. Gill -- the brilliantly cutting columnist for The Sunday Times, Vanity Fair, Esquire, and, in Australia, Gourmet Traveller -- was in town for the Sydney Writers' Festival, and filled his spare time dining around the city. Restaurants he tried included Longrain, Est, Porteno, Ms G's, Quay, Sean's Panaroma, Rockpool Bar & Grill, Spice Temple, Icebergs, and Fratelli Fresh. He declared Australian food had ``grown up'' since his last visit, five years ago. ``It seems to be less about fusion than it was,'' Gill said. ``But there is a definite flavour here and the flavours of Asia are very strong. I haven't really had a bad meal since I've been here. I'm not saying you couldn't get one, but I haven't been able to have one so far.'' Gill and his partner, The Blonde, aka British socialite Nicola Formby -- who once went out with media baron James Packer -- dined with The Sunday Telegraph on Wednesday at an intimate dinner at Bondi's Sean's Panaroma. Despite his reputation as a ferocious critic, Gill is urbane, funny and charismatic. During the dinner, his friend, American celebrity chef and writer Anthony Bourdain, popped in for drinks and cheese. Sunday Telegraph (Sydney), May 22
